At the high-end forum of "China Fashion Convention" in 2011, I was honored to listen to a speech by Mr. Huang Yongsong, a Taiwan scholar, on the theme of "starting from handmade art".

Mr. Yung sung has been over forty years since he founded the magazine.

In the past forty years, he has gone all over the countryside of China to collect "Chinese", "traditional" and "living" folk handicraft culture, in order to build a gene bank of Chinese traditional culture.


  


 

 


Mr. Yong song began with the publication of the theory of methodology by Descartes, the founder and rationalist of the modern European Philosophy in 1637.

This book is considered to be the Manifesto of modern philosophy, and the tree has become the banner of rationalism epistemology.

Starting from Descartes's rationalism, the West completed the industrial technological revolution with scientific practice as the turning point, opened up the glorious chapter of the world's modern scientific and technological revolution, and realized the whole progress of supporting the industrial production, and achieved the western world that we saw today.


Through Mr. Yung Sung's description, I can feel that industry has been the master of an era, and it is time-saving, convenient and uniform.

The concept of nature permeates the whole society. This strategy has won many wars in the hands of businessmen in the commercial society.

But today, excessive commercialization makes us increasingly unfamiliar with everyday life.

Under the tipping information, the choices we face every day seem to be very complicated, stereoscopic and weird. Everyday life seems to have been polished into fixed shapes and patterns.

But we still feel that we can't catch anything. We can't feel what it should be.

This kind of recovery can not feel the original appearance of life, making many people confused, lonely, anxious and crazy.


Nowadays, the traditional handicraft art is turning back like a pendulum. It is because the duplication of industry has solved the extreme needs of existence for us. People have the spare power and leisure to make art, quality and creativity to life. People do not want to give in to the monotony of reproduction and the convenience of mentally retarded.


Mr. Yung Sung's story of exploring folk handicraft culture deeply attracted me at this time.

This is a story that goes deep into southwest China to find out the batik dyeing process of Miao nationality.

The photo shows the Chinese traditional printing and dyeing process.

Mr. Yung sung described the process as "the beauty of simplicity": paving the white cloth on the plank and melting the yellow wax into a metal container and melting it with a small fire.

The main tool for batik dyeing is that the wax knife is only a sharp cut bamboo knife. Artisans use this bamboo knife and dip it on wax cloth to paint.

Batik patterns are usually regular geometric shapes, such as straight lines, squares, diamonds, circles, etc.

When drawing circular and other arcs, the artisans have no way to sketch out the curves of the patterns. They are only carefully drawn through bamboo knives, though not smooth and smooth, but they are also beautiful with originality.

After drawing the pattern, put the cloth in the dye vat for a few hours, then remove it into the clear water and wash the excess dye. Finally, add the water pot to boil the wax.

The fuel is usually blue, because the dye in the waxed area of the painting can not be adhered to, and eventually becomes white. The original blank area is dyed blue, and the finished products are blue and white, plain and beautiful.

For a moment, I was very moved. This is not a cloth produced in the process of mechanized production, but a piece of cloth full of enthusiasm for life.

This reminds me of the "feel economy".

Some people have summed up the "feel economy": Artisan spirit, industry soul and quality of life.

For me, it is "the traditional stage of mountains and rivers, the background of Humanities and history, and the props of creative craft", which may be regarded as a mixture of fashion and tradition.

It is a deep culture and deep economy, not just manual, but a profound experience of life and history. It is just like the sound of Mr. MONITOR in the United Kingdom, the sewing art of SINGER in the United States, even in the remote Luzhou oil paper umbrella workshop and the handmade petal Xuan paper workshop in Fenghuang town.

Looking at the batik cloth on the big screen again, it seems that it not only carries the culture, but also contains the spirit of "spirituality" and "persistence".

Then, focusing on the unsmooth curve again, it seems to be a re understanding of "imperfect" and "unexpected". They have a dramatic style, which seems to have come out of dreams or fairy tales. It seems that they are fighting against and competing for the lost imagination with the mechanical segmentation and lack of aesthetic feeling.


Mr. Yong song believes that design should help users solve problems, and should not only increase market share for large enterprises, but should not only win the design awards for designers and design institutes. He hopes that Chinese designers should reflect on the deep cultural accumulation of their own nationalities and get the nutrition of spirit and thought from them.
