The United States Will Levy A Comprehensive Tariff On Imports Of Mexico From June 10Th.
According to relevant foreign media reports, US President Trump said in a meeting with Mexico in June 3rd that the United States will impose a comprehensive tariff on imports of Mexico from June 10th, so as to put pressure on Mexico to solve the problem of Central American immigrants going to the United States via Mexico. It is understood that this move worries the global market for the new fronts of the US trade war.
Mexico's foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said Mexico will continue to take measures to prevent Central American immigrants from entering the US border. The government rebutted Trump's accusation of Mexico's "doing nothing", saying that without Mexico's efforts, 250 thousand immigrants will arrive in the US in 2019.
Theoretically, this will reduce the number of new settlers in Central America to almost zero, thereby avoiding the 5% tariff that will come into effect next week. Mexico's economy, which relies heavily on exports to the US, has shrunk in the first quarter of this year and will be in trouble with US tax measures.
Economists at Goldman Sachs believe that the possibility of imposing tariffs on Mexico's imports is 70% in June 10th.
In response, Graciela Marquez said in a statement that these tariffs will affect 50 states and undermine the value chain, consumer interests and trade related employment opportunities between the two countries. She said that if the United States imposed tariffs, Mexico would take retaliatory measures or fight against American goods or seek compensation through multilateral organizations.
According to U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the United States imposed a 5% tariff on goods imported from Mexico last year, which may lead to an increase of $17 billion in taxes on US businesses and consumers. The agency said that if Trump raised tariffs to 25% as he threatened, the figure would reach $86 billion. The American Chamber of Commerce says they are studying ways to challenge the Trump plan, including legal measures.
